February is a rough month in Iowa. Winter just keeps holding on, and the lack of sunshine and warmth starts to get to me. The days go by slowly, yet the weeks somehow go by quickly, and by the end of it, I don’t even know what I’ve been doing all month. I find it harder to get myself outside, and I crave the fresh growth of spring.
Sometimes though, I force myself out into the cold of winter and remember that Mother Nature is still living and breathing around me.
Yesterday, I went to one of my stand-by nature spots, Heery Woods State Park. It’s right down the road and always provides a quick nature fix when I need it. The gates were closed to cars because of the recent ice storm we had, so I parked outside and walked in. These are my favorite days because I get the whole place to myself. The only sounds made are my footsteps, the rush of the dam, and little movements from nearby woodland creatures.
Because of the recent bout of freezing rain and the perfect angle of sunlight, the whole place was lit up by perfect strings of fairy lights.
The beauty that winter creates took my breath away, and the sunlight provided the warmth my soul needed to remember that I can make it through until spring.
